more a great thought than a great machine

james-jeans

“The stream of human knowledge is impartially heading towards a non-mechanical reality. The universe begins to look more like a great thought than a great machine. Mind no longer appears to be an accidental intruder into the realm of matter. We are beginning to suspect that we ought rather to hail it as the creator and governor of this realm.”

It’s a great quote. I wonder if that’s the original formulation of the idea right there in 1930, or if it can be traced back (in Western thought) before that?

So I wikipedia’d the guy. I don’t know how many readers you have, but what’s the chance that one of them also hails from Ormskirk, Lancashire, a tiny dot on the little green island next to France? :)

Anyway I went to visit my parents last week (they still live there) and in a charity shop I found one of his books, from 1931, still with its DJ and fold-out star maps. Very cool.

pictures or it didn’t happen! :)
